Bill “Mr. Bojangles” Robinson

Bill Robinson (1878-1949) is considered one of the best tap dancers of all time.  Muriel first met Bill around 1923 in San Francisco.  Known professionally as “Mr. Bojangles”, Bill performed in primarily black vaudeville theaters until later in life, when he started making movies and appearing on Broadway.  He is best known for  the series of films he did with Shirley Temple.  Although he died broke, at his funeral in New York City, over a million people showed up to mourn this beloved dancer.

In the film, The Little Colonel, Bill and Shirley do the now famous stair dance.
